Eugene and Lucy discuss diversity, or lack thereof, in British tennis; Taylor Townsend’s exciting news; events in Ostrava, Cologne and Antwerp; and look ahead to Vienna
Lack of diversity in British Tennis Andy Murray shined a light on the issue in his IG story (posting MaliVai Washington’s interview with Stuart Fraser in The Times – no black board members on the LTA or Wimbledon boards). Coco Gauff gave Murray props for doing so. “For someone like him to call for diversity, it shows how great an ally he is.”
Taylor Townsend News The 24-year-old American is having a baby! Due March 2021, that means she was pregnant when competing at this year’s US Open where she reached the semi-finals in the doubles with Asia Muhammad. It’s been a great year for Townsend who secured her first-ever WTA title in Auckland back in January.
Coco in Ostrava Coco Gauff comfortably came through qualifying, won her first-round match against Katerina Siniakova in straight sets before going down to third seed and eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka in three quality sets. Sabalenka was very complimentary about Gauff afterwards.
Felix in Cologne Felix Auger-Aliassime reached his third final of the year and lost to top seed Alexander Zverev – beat Roberto Bautista Agut en route to the final. Remained in Cologne for the second edition of the tournament and notably beat Yoshihito Nishioka for the first time in three meetings. Also appreciate The Swag band bringing the vibes.
Frances in Antwerp Frances Tiafoe got past sixth seed Dusan Lajovic in straight sets with a business-like display, but fell to British No.1 Dan Evans in the second round. Match wasn’t televised as it was played on Court 1. ATP TennisTV need to fix that next year!
Looking Ahead Stacked field for the Erste Bank Open in Vienna. Gael Monfils takes on Pablo Carreno Busta in the first round. Felix starts against a qualifier. Novak Djokovic and Dominic Thiem are also in the draw.
